Well, as you may already know i recently made the best purchase of my life, my ps3. But alas, i have a few questions. How hard would it be to install a new operating system? Can you use normal IE so i could use tabs? Is there any way to instal computer programs that download like AIM? Do i have to pay money to get a new OS? Can anyone help me instal a new OS?
Anyways, just use thios thread to post questions regarding the ps3 and announcements of good looking games coming out.
Oh, and w00t for browsing the web with a big screen TV =D

you see, this is why my forum is awesome. i happen to know just about everything concerning your questions. i plan on turning my ps3 into a full blown computer in a paycheck or two. the only thing i need is a HDTV.
Yellow Dog Linux is an operating system that was designed by linux specifically for use with the ps3. that is the OS i'm going to install when i get an hdtv. you need an hdtv with either component or hdmi hookups or you will just get a blue screen when you boot up linux.

make damn sure you back up your HDD before you format it. it's possible to run fedora core linux and ubuntu linux on ps3, but i know nothing about it and i wouldn't attempt it.
linux is an operating system based on freeware. all versions of all of its software are knock offs of microsoft and apple software that are completely free. it has instant messaging and paint and photo editing and animation apps and pretty muich every kind of app you could need. if you're still using IE u dum nigga get firefox. it has tabs, AND it doesn't suck. firefox was using tabs looong before internet explorer ever had them.
what you need:
-ps3
-sixaxis
-keyboard
-mouse
-large storage device for backup
-copy of YDL
-HDTV with component or hdmi video connectors
-patience

I cant really get an hdtv that i would have unlimited access to except at my moms
And i have some cash problems as well, my id is Sputnack and i have COD-4 <----What lvl are you?
Oh, with cod-4 i only rented it and played it untill it was well over due and i had to return it today, ill be going to buy it with my first paycheck tho.
Oh, and thanks for the info dan, im prolly moving in with my mom once she gets a house in a monthish, in that case i would have my own 55" lcd and a huge bedroom, in which case i would definetly look into linux. Ill just use the ps3 for gaming for now, whats your i.d dan?

my psn id is TheHelldozer. it used to be DookieMatter but i couldn't get used to the name. it wouldn't let me choose helldozer for some reason. i sent you an invite.
as far as free games, you could steal them. i wouldn't. with linux you can run emulators like on psp, so you can play free oldschool games on the bigscreen, but other than that no free games.
and eric, i wouldn't replace your computer with a ps3 until your ps3 can do everything a computer can do. i for one am planning to get a usb printer for it, as well as playstation eye for photos, video capture, online chat, and for its awesome four microphone array thats built into it. nothing beats actually understanding what people are saying. i wonder if its bad to leave the ps3 on for days at a time like i do with my computer. seriously, this computer hasn't been turned off in over a month. |

we've been leaving this computer on for weeks at a time for 5 years, it can't be that bad for it. |

| well in a couple of weeks i'll have an hdtv, so i decided not to do the sd install of linux. i do have the iso burned now though so i'm ready. need that external hard drive formated to fat32 still. i talked to that fat fucking shit at gamestop and he says he leaves his ps3 running 24/7 and it never overheats. that makes me feel better about the linux thing. |
